Mind The Gap – Bridging the gender gap in contemporary music by promoting women and non-binary composers

Across Europe, less than 3% of classical and contemporary music performed between 2016 and 2018 was composed by women. Despite growing awareness, gender parity in music creation remains far from achieved. The Mind the Gapproject, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme, addresses this critical imbalance by highlighting, supporting, and amplifying the works of European women and non-binary composers across generations.

Led by Piano and Co (France) in collaboration with Pro Progressione (Hungary), Sansusī (Latvia), and Miso Music Portugal (Portugal), Mind the Gap fosters a more inclusive contemporary music landscape through two complementary strategic goals: initiating new creation opportunities and raising awareness about gender equality throughout the music sector.

Central to the project is the Mind the Gap Manifesto, a shared commitment to inclusive practices, artistic freedom, and structural change. It lays the foundation for all project activities, from the international open call to the creation of the collective work Cadavre Exquis Musical, and beyond.

Pro Progressione is responsible for supporting the creative residencies, hosting the world premiere concert in Budapest, and managing the international call for composers. Beyond performances, the project encompasses workshops, conferences, filmed interviews, and a charter of shared values, all aiming to create sustainable tools for lasting impact.

Mind the Gap envisions a European music scene where diversity thrives, and every voice can be heard.

Mind the Gap project is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
