LEAP

LEAP is an innovative project with 4 project partners that aims to promote anti-racism and foster inclusive dialogue around the legacies of colonialism in contemporary Europe. Through a series events, LEAP will engage citizens, especially young people and those of African descent, in deconstructing harmful narratives and reimagining a more equitable future.

The project encompasses a diverse range of activities, beginning with a launch summit in Guadeloupe that explores four key narrative themes. The project continues with training sessions designed for cultural agents and policymakers, as well as artist-led workshops at the Mediterranea 20 Young Artists Biennale. A co-creation hackathon targeting young people is also included in the project’s lineup. Four thematic exhibitions form a significant part of the project, each hosted in a different European city: Nantes will focus on Afro-descendants, Black lives and European diversity; Budapest will explore the transatlantic trade of enslaved people; Lisbon will examine Luso-Tropicalism and denial theories; and Barcelona will address women’s subjugation and gender bias. The project culminates with a final commemorative summit in Lisbon.

By combining historical research, creative approaches, and community engagement, LEAP seeks to stimulate critical reflection on Europe’s colonial past and its ongoing impacts. The project will leverage digital technologies and artistic collaborations to make these complex topics accessible to wider audiences.

As a partner, Pro Progressione will host an exhibition in Budapest focused on the transatlantic slave trade, accompanied by podcast and roundtable discussion to encourage local dialogue.

Through LEAP, we aim to contribute to building more inclusive European societies by confronting difficult histories and amplifying diverse voices. The project runs for 14 months and is co-funded by the European Union’s CERV programme.
