Free Radicals is a two-year research project exploring the intersections between plant biodiversity and artistic practice, co-funded by Creative Europe.
Through a symposium and a series of artist residencies and living labs, we will gather research and write an open-source toolkit for individuals and institutions within the creative and cultural sectors designed to shape practices that support plant biodiversity.
The Free Radicals toolkit is being shaped by six non-profit organisations rooted across Europe — from the mountains of Galicia and the rural heartlands of Armenia to the forests of Portugal, the cities of Berlin and Budapest, and the poetically kafkaesque cultural corridors of Prague. Each partner brings a distinct practice — in literature, permaculture, sound ecologies, urban systems, or design — yet all are united by a shared commitment to reimagining the relationship between culture and the living world.
In close collaboration with artists, collectives, and a constellation of mentors — from material scientists and circular economy thinkers to ethnobotanists, indigenous knowledge holders, and sustainable arts practitioners — the consortium is co-creating, testing, and grounding the toolkit across diverse local contexts.
This is not a top-down manual, but a shared inquiry into how art and (plant-related) science can meet, inform, and enrich one another.
