LIFE Bauhausing Europe – exhibition

You can see the next steps in the renovation of the Bethlen Square Theatre and our exhibition made from the winning ideas of the LIFE Bauhausing Europe project architectural competition on the theater’s outdoor signs.

The Bauhausing methodology

In the LIFE Bauhausing Europe project we have developed an innovative methodology based on the collective rehabilitation and re-imagination of public buildings to promote social and environmental circularity in urban environments. Based on the involvement of citizens and social agents, we intend it to serve as a reference for the New European Bauhaus.

This approach combines architectural restoration, urban revitalisation and citizen education through collaborative tools

About the Life Bauhausing Europe project

LIFE Bauhausing Europe is a project that promotes the renovation of buildings and public spaces as drivers of change for the transformation of neighbourhoods.

It is present in five cities in four European countries: Blanca and Cartagena (Spain), the Erzsébetváros district in Budapest (Hungary), Adazi (Latvia) and Varazdin (Croatia).

What am I going to see in this exhibition?

What you see on the panels of this exhibition are the winning projects of the public ideas competition that took place in the five municipalities where the LIFE Bauhausing Europe project is being developed.

This is the result of a collective co-design work carried out by the citizens, which was subsequently converted into technical bases with the participation of local transdisciplinary experts and finally reinterpreted, in accordance with these bases, by architects from all over the European Union.

LIFE programme and the New European Bauhaus

LIFE

The European Union’s LIFE programme has been supporting environmental and climate projects since 1992, promoting innovative solutions in areas such as energy efficiency, biodiversity conservation and pollution reduction. It aims to promote a sustainable economy and improve citizens’ quality of life by funding initiatives that address the most pressing environmental challenges.

In addition, LIFE promotes urban regeneration and sustainable construction, supporting energy efficiency in buildings and the use of renewable energy. It contributes to the objectives of the European Green Pact, helping cities to adapt to climate change and to promote greener and more sustainable development.

New European Bauhaus

The New European Bauhaus is a European Union initiative that seeks to transform urban spaces with sustainable, inclusive and aesthetically appealing solutions. Inspired by the Bauhaus movement, it promotes the creation of environments that improve quality of life, promote energy efficiency and use environmentally friendly materials.

It encourages collaboration between designers, architects, artists and citizens, developing projects that respond to climate and social challenges. The New Bauhaus Europe promotes the creation of more sustainable and liveable cities, aligned with the principles of the European Green Pact.

Bethlen Square Theatre: Where Past and Present Meet
Designers: Krisztián Tóth, Veronika Vivas

The principle behind the reimagination of the reception areas at Bethlen Square Theatre was to create an open, attractive, and multifunctional space with larger capacity and better connections to the neighbourhood.

The calm and cosy interior preserves the traditional atmosphere and spirit of the place while expressing the theatre’s mission: to be innovative, contemporary, and collaborative. The materials used reflect the quality befitting a theatre, while environmental sustainability remains a key consideration.

The renovation also paves the way for technical modernization. As a result of the upgrades, 30% saving in water and energy consumption is expected, enabling more sustainable and cost-effective operation.
